LoveVoodoo.com Sponsors Massive D.C. Demonstration Against Blaming Victims of Sexual Assault; Numerous SlutWalks Scheduled
across U.S. and Canada
LoveVoodoo.com, a Web site dedicated to alternative and/or swinging lifestyles for couples and singles, has announced that it will sponsor Washington D.C.'s SlutWalk on August 13, 2011, from noon until 3 p.m. at the National Mall, leading dozens of commercial and nonprofit allies of the event. SlutWalk D.C. is one of many high-profile demonstrations of the same name throughout North America aimed at increasing dialogue and raising awareness about prevalent attitudes in society that blame victims in sexual-assault cases.
The term "SlutWalk" was coined by activists following a January 24 rape incident in Toronto, Canada where a representative of the Toronto Police gave insight into law enforcement's view of sexual assault by stating "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." The goal of the SlutWalk is to bring together people of all genders, ages, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and economic statuses to raise awareness about and bring an end to "Rape Culture," "Slut Shaming," and "Victim Blaming."
LoveVoodoo co-founder, Todd Crawford, says his organization will have representatives at SlutWalk D.C., distributing information, free trial memberships, and other items. "We encourage everyone, especially LoveVoodoo members, to attend the event," he continues. "It seems Toronto police believe women who dress like 'sluts' are asking for it. Unfortunately, we believe that attitude extends far beyond the Toronto Police Department. We at LoveVoodoo -- or in alternative lifestyles generally -- respect that women should be allowed to choose to dress provocatively without fearing attack. Obviously, we are not the only ones; SlutWalks have been popping up all over the place.“
“This is an opportunity to let the rest of society know they have been misjudging the Lifestyle for years,” Crawford explains. “LoveVoodoo wants to take proactive steps in protecting women from the shame and violence that can be directed against them if they dress as so-called sluts. We want to help SlutWalk organizers take back the word ’Slut.’ "
LoveVoodoo.com is one of the nation's fastest-growing swingers or "Lifestyle" Web sites, boasting more than 100,000 active users in the United States from all walks of life. Members can create profiles, post photos, and email other members. Areas for blogs, chats, group travel, and other activities are also available.
